Overview
The Fiancé and Spouse Visas allow partners of British citizens or persons settled in the UK to join or remain with them lawfully. Applicants can enter or stay in the UK on the basis of a genuine and subsisting relationship, subject to meeting the financial and eligibility requirements of UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI).
A Fiancé Visa is typically granted for six months to enable marriage in the UK, after which applicants can switch to a Spouse Visa. The Spouse Visa is granted for 2 years 6 months and can lead to settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) after five years of continuous residence.
Eligibility Requirements
- The sponsor must be a British citizen or hold Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK.
- Both partners must be aged 18 or over and intend to live together permanently in the UK after marriage or civil partnership.
- The relationship must be genuine and subsisting, supported by credible evidence of contact and commitment.
- The couple must meet the financial requirement – a minimum gross annual income of £18,600 or adequate savings if income is below the threshold.
- Applicants must have adequate accommodation without recourse to public funds.
- An approved English language test certificate (A1 level for entry, A2 for extension) is required unless exempt.

- Financial documents – payslips, employment letters, bank statements covering at least six months.

- English language certificate from an approved provider.
- TB test certificate if required (depending on country of residence).
