Overview
The Spouse and Partner Visa allows the husband, wife, civil partner, or unmarried partner of a British citizen or settled person to live and work in the UK. The initial visa is usually granted for 33 months if applied from outside the UK and 30 months if applied within the UK. It forms part of the five-year route to Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Eligibility Requirements
- Both partners must be aged 18 or over and intend to live together permanently in the UK.
- The UK-based partner must be a British citizen or a person with settled status (ILR or EU Settlement Scheme status).

- You must meet the financial requirement — a minimum annual income of £29,000 plus allowances for children, or savings equivalent.
- You must have adequate accommodation without reliance on public funds.
- You must meet the English language requirement (A1 CEFR for first application, A2 for extension, B1 for ILR) unless exempt.
- You must not fall for refusal under the general grounds of immigration rules (e.g., criminal convictions or previous breach of immigration conditions).
Required Documents Checklist
- Valid passport and previous travel documents.
- Marriage or civil partnership certificate, or evidence of a two-year cohabiting relationship (for unmarried partners).
- Evidence of relationship history — photos, messages, joint tenancy agreements, bills, and correspondence.
- Financial evidence — payslips, bank statements, employment letters, self-employment records or sponsor savings statements.
- Accommodation proof — tenancy agreement, mortgage statement or home-owner confirmation.
- English language certificate (from an approved provider) or proof of degree taught in English.
- TB test certificate (if required).
- Divorce or death certificate for any previous spouse or partner (if applicable).
- Certified translations for any non-English documents.
Application Process
